El detector de sobrecalentamiento del motor es un detector de dos terminales, sin polaridad, normalmente abierto, que se cierra cuando la temperatura del motor alcanza los 200 °F y activa un dispositivo visual y/o audible.

El detector es del tipo atornillable que se atornilla al bloque del motor o a la culata del motor utilizando los pernos del motor o de la culata. Es un interruptor multivoltaje que puede funcionar con 12v, 24v y 32v. Es ideal para aplicaciones métricas que no pueden usar el detector de sobrecalentamiento del motor 20118 (212A) ya que es MPT de 1/2 pulgada.
